Job Description
Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist

The incumbent is responsible for the comprehensive technical support of highly sophisticated biomedical instrumentation systems. These systems are identifiable by their complex, often computerized electronics; by the need for technical support well beyond normal maintenance and repair; and by observation that in other university-level hospitals, such systems are often supported strictly by contractual services. This support includes technical support, repair, preventive maintenance, calibration, inspection, evaluation, some user training, and consultation with the end users. Through this support, the incumbent's position is critical to the delivery of high quality patient care. The incumbent works in all areas of this Medical Center, both patient care and other.

Major Duties:

* Maintains a variety of Highly Sophisticated Biomedical Instrumentation Systems (HSBIS).

* Plans and performs scheduled and unscheduled (emergency maintenance on equipment to ensure that it is operating properly, calibrated, and in compliance with applicable codes and standards.

* Assists users in applications and in performance evaluation investigations, both of systems being considered for purchase and of systems in use.

* Recommends whether equipment is to be removed from service, allowed to remain in service, or be restored to service.

*Serves as a technical advisor and consultant to physicians, clinical personnel, Chief Biomedical Engineering Technician, and to the Biomedical Engineer in the evaluation and purchase of new equipment to meet current and projected needs of this Medical Center.

* Participates in the design and development of devices needed.* Teaches co-workers about equipment repair, equipment operators about aspects of equipment operation.

Work Schedule:8:00am - 4:30pm, Monday to Friday

Time-in-grade: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements.

Specialized Experience: Applicants must have One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-09) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Responsible for medical and non-medical systems, trouble shoots equipment problems and takes corrective action to restore device to full operational level. Serves as consultant to the clinical and administrative staff.

OR

Education: Education may be substituted for specialized experience at the GS-11 level. In order to substitute education, you must possess a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or three (3) full years of progressively higher graduate leading to a degree or LL.M., if related.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The selectee handles objects weighing up to twenty (20) pounds routinely, and occasionally handles objects up to (50) pounds.
